Oh Canada… Growing up in Canada it’s crazy to me how many shows I watched that my American friends have little idea existed! So I wanted to take a second and give props to some great Canadian shows that US audiences should check out. Luckily you already speak the language, so no subtitles needed!
Schitt’s Creek
Created by Eugene and Dan Levy, Schitt’s Creek follows the wealthy Rose family as they adapt to life in the charmingly eccentric town of Schitt’s Creek after losing their fortune. With standout performances from Catherine O’Hara and Annie Murphy, this comedy is brimming with laughs and heartwarming moments. It’s a perfect blend of humor and heartfelt storytelling that makes it a must-watch for anyone who enjoys a good mix of comedy and genuine emotion. Also crazy fun fact the Motel used for the show also house basketball players at Athlete Institute where some of the best Canadian High School Basketball players have played.
Trailer Park Boys
Trailer Park Boys is that quirky Canadian comedy series that’s become a cult classic. This mockumentary-style show dives into the hilarious misadventures of Ricky, Julian, and Bubbles, three petty criminals navigating life in Sunnyvale Trailer Park. With its irreverent humor and memorable quotes, it’s one of the most quotable shows out there. The cast runs deep and you’ll love/hate just about all of them! Netflix gave it a big boost, introducing it to a wider U.S. audience and turning it into a must-watch for fans of offbeat comedy.
Kim’s Convenience
The series centers around the Korean-Canadian Kim family, who run a bustling convenience store in Toronto. It’s a fantastic opportunity to see a young Simu Liu before his big break in Hollywood. The show offers a charming glimpse into the family business dynamic while showcasing a genuine Canadian experience. With its mix of humor and heartfelt moments, it’s a great watch for anyone interested in a real slice of life from the Canadian multicultural landscape.
Degrassi
Degrassi is the iconic Canadian teen drama that’s captivated audiences for decades. Set in the halls of Degrassi Community School, this series tackles real-life issues faced by teenagers, from friendships and relationships to serious topics like bullying and mental health. Known for its diverse cast and groundbreaking storytelling Degrassi “Goes there” Perfect for anyone who loves authentic drama, Degrassi is a must-watch. Whether it be the super OG version or the Next Generation. On Samsung TV there is a Degrassi Channel and few things are better then binging a bunch of random episodes.
Kenny Vs Spenny
If you’re looking for outrageous comedy, Kenny vs. Spenny is the Canadian show you need to watch. Imagine a crazier, more extreme Impractical Jokers. This reality-comedy series pits two best friends, Kenny Hotz and Spencer Rice, against each other in a series of absurd and hilarious competitions. From who can stay awake the longest to who can endure the most humiliation to who could sell the most bibles. It’s a tale as old as time! While Matt Stone and Trey Parker from South Park served as executive producers during a brief run on Comedy Central, it has so many episodes that are worth watching.
