A board book roundup for storytime, car rides, and everything in between
My son is obsessed with books and honestly, I love it. One of my favorite things is when he walks over to his cubby and proudly grabs a book for us to read. He’s already got strong preferences: if he doesn’t like something, he’ll let you know by bailing on page six. No hard feelings, little dude.
It’s amazing watching him learn new words, point to things he recognizes (cars are a huge hit), and crack up at the pages he loves. Personally, I’m a sucker for a lot of the books I was raised on, but it’s also been awesome to discover new characters and stories together. Some of my childhood favorites haven’t aged well (looking at you, Curious George and Babar), but others still hold up—and we’re always exploring.
Since we’re still firmly in the board book phase (RIP lift-the-flap books—we hardly knew ye), here are the toddler books I love reading with my son. They’re fun, silly, sweet, and most importantly: he keeps picking them up again and again.

🐟 The Pout-Pout Fish
👉 Find it on Amazon
This was one of the first books my son got attached to. There is nothing cuter than him saying “Pout-Pout” when he wants to read it. The rhyming is fun, and the message actually sticks. There are a bunch of spinoffs too—bedtime, alphabet, even a dentist visit version.
🚜 Little Blue Truck
👉 Find it on Amazon
He loves anything with wheels, so this one was an immediate win. It combines trucks and animal sounds, which is basically the toddler jackpot. The honk-along and seasonal versions (springtime, bedtime) keep it feeling fresh.
🧸 Corduroy
👉 Find it on Amazon
I loved this one growing up, and it’s still such a sweet story. There’s something timeless about Corduroy’s little overalls and quiet optimism. We even got him a Corduroy stuffed animal that he holds while we read. Melt.
🍩 Look, Look Again
👉 Find it on Amazon
This book is interactive and super creative. You turn one image into something totally different a donut becomes a cat, for example. Great for teaching numbers and shapes, and it’s fun whether we’re reading it together or he’s flipping through and giggling on his own.
🪿 The Serious Goose
👉 Find it on Amazon
Written by Jimmy Kimmel, this one encourages full-on silliness. The goose is serious—until your kid tries to make it laugh. It’s interactive, ridiculous, and always a hit. Just a heads up: it’s a paper page book, so read it together (gently).
🚛 Noisy Trucks (and other Noisy Books)
👉 Find it on Amazon
This series has been a lifesaver. The buttons make truck noises, animal sounds, and more—and they’re surprisingly good quality. Noisy Trucks was the gateway book, and we quickly bought five more. Perfect for car rides and independent play.
🐾 Demdaco Sound Books
👉 Find it on Amazon
These are soft-touch sound books with a little wand you use to activate noises. My son loves the animal versions, and they’re awesome for vocabulary building. Bonus: they’re great for road trips (but maybe skip them on a plane…).
💪 Indestructibles
👉 Find it on Amazon
These are exactly what they claim to be—rip-proof, drool-proof, chew-proof. They’re lightweight and perfect for travel. We always keep one in the diaper bag, and the bright visuals keep him engaged every time.
🐥 Sandra Boynton Anything
👉 Find it on Amazon
Boynton books are our MVPs. They’re short, rhythmic, goofy, and perfect for toddlers’ attention spans. We usually read 3–4 in a row during one sitting. Moo Baa La La La and The Going to Bed Book are big hits around here.
🐘 That’s Not My… Series
👉 Find it on Amazon
This series is super tactile and fun. Each book walks through what something isn’t before ending on what it is. “That’s not my elephant, its ears are too tufty.” It’s also very British, which I kind of love.
🌌 Star Wars Block
👉 Find it on Amazon
As a big Star Wars fan, I wanted to introduce him early—and this book delivered. It’s a chunky visual guide to characters, ships, planets, and more. His reaction to the Yoda page? Pure joy. I’m proud to say he recognized Chewbacca before he could say “ball.”
🧡 Bonus: I Love You, Daddy
👉 Find it on Amazon
This one’s soft, sweet, and simple—a perfect bedtime wind-down. It always reminds me how lucky I am to get these storytime moments.
Final Thoughts
Books have become a huge part of our routine—bedtime, chill time, or even tantrum distractions. I love watching my son light up at the books he loves, and it’s been really meaningful to find the ones we enjoy reading together.
If you’re a parent, grandparent, or just looking for a solid toddler gift, these books have been big wins in our household.
Got a favorite I missed? Drop it in the comments—I’m always looking for new additions to our library!
